VIN SULLIVAN FESTIVAL of FOOTBALL 2006

The Abergavenny Thursdays Junior Football Club hosted the Vin Sullivan Festival of Football at their Pen y Pound Stadium over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The club also hosted two teams from Belgium the VK Hooikt with a warm welcome from the Belgium Embassy to Abergavenny and Wales. Mr William P Duggan, Vice Chairman and Public Relations Officer for the Junior Club stated: "The committee, parents and children of the Abergavenny Thursdays Junior Football Club gave a warm welcome to all participating teams giving them the opportunity on this occasion, to act as Ambassadors to their club.

On arrival, the overseas guests were greeted at the Pen y Pound Stadium with a welcoming guide pack to Abergavenny Town. The Belgium adults were staying in local B&B and their children were accomodated by host family members of the Abergavenny Junior football section. On Saturday 26th a full programme of football was played on a professionally prepared playing pitch, reflecting the knowledge, skills and ability of

all the ground persons involved. A family packed stadium observed a display of football with discipline, motivation and commitment to their game. The hard work of their coaches, assistants was reflected in each game played.

The presentation of medals was made by Mr Mel Davies, football mentor and former Manager of the Abergavenny Thursdays 1st Senior Team, and Mr Robert (Bob) Jenkins, Chairperson of Abergavenny Juniors. There was an amplified applause of proud coaches, assistants and parents. A fine achievement also by the fixtures Secretary, Mr Andy McCloy and Mr Martin Palmer, Mr Phil Hemmings of the festival tournament committee and officials responsible for score keeping on the day.

The evening entertainment had full participation in the club house by all ages! The Personnel of the hospitality marquee, club bar team and management are commended for their professional approach in which they greeted and served all their guests over the festival weekend. the food preparation and presentation of evening meals was indeed a festival of continental flavours, enjoyed by one and all. club accepted an invitation to visit Belgium in May of 2007.

The Junior committee would like to thank the Abergavenny thursdays Trust; Thursdays Junior Football Festival Committee; Mrs Shan Greeves Graphic Artist; the Host families and all the parents who assisted in the event. the Rotary club of Abergavenny; Abergavenny chamber of Trade; Abergavenny Tourist Office; Abergavenny Scouts and Monmouthshire Council representatives Mr & Mrs Chris Woodhouse. The Mayor of Brynmawr, Mr Robert Ball; Mrs Sue Ball of BrynmawrScene Visitor & Info Centre; Heddlu Gwent Police; Dr Erhardt; Mr Alan Griffith; Mr Andrew Woodhouse; BSkyB Sports; BRfm Radio for Blaenau Gwent and all visitors to the Vin Sullivan Festival of Football 2006. Thanks also to the local business outlets who assisted by way of funding sponsorship advertisement for the programme and club printers B and N Printers of Abergavenny. The Junior Club Secretary, Mr Chris Wilkins's administration skills and networking reflect the high standard required to host such a festival. The Club's intention is to coach and train each young player to a high level of fitness, knowledge and discipline to bring motivation, inspiration and ambition to each player.
